A Powerful Earthquake Has Struck Southern Japan
On 28 July 2026, a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands.
The earthquake caused severe damage to homes, public facilities, roads, businesses, and essential infrastructure. Strong aftershocks have continued across the affected area, leaving many families afraid to return to their homes.
As of 31 July 2026, at least 34 people had been confirmed dead. Thousands of people were staying in evacuation centers, vehicles, tents, and other temporary locations while emergency teams continued search and rescue operations.
The disaster has also disrupted access to essential services. Around 79,000 households were reported to be without running water, while approximately 3,500 households remained without electricity. More than 9,000 people were staying in shelters as temperatures reached dangerous summer levels.
Behind these numbers are families facing an uncertain future.
Parents are searching for clean water and food for their children. Older people are struggling in crowded shelters during extreme heat. Some residents are sleeping in cars or tents because their homes have been damaged or they are afraid of further aftershocks.
For those affected, the emergency continues long after the ground stops shaking.
Human Initiative Japan Is Preparing an Emergency Response
Human Initiative Japan is mobilizing to support communities affected by the earthquake.
Our initial response will begin with a rapid needs assessment to understand the conditions facing affected families, identify priority locations, and determine the most urgent gaps in assistance.
We will also communicate and coordinate with local stakeholders, community representatives, authorities, and humanitarian partners. This process is important to ensure that assistance is appropriate, coordinated, and delivered to people who need it most.
Based on the assessment findings, operational access, and coordination with relevant authorities, Human Initiative Japan plans to distribute urgent basic necessities, including hot meals, food assistance, clean drinking water, and other essential relief items. We may also support evacuation centers and emergency shelters operated by local authorities by helping provide assistance for displaced families.
