Human Initiative Continues Emergency Evacuations Amid Severe Floods in Aceh
Heavy rain starting on 25 November caused widespread flooding in Aceh. Water levels rose quickly, reaching more than two meters in some residential areas. Landslides also blocked the main road to Central Aceh. Meanwhile, five 150 kV transmission towers on the SUTT Arun–Bireuen line collapsed due to flash floods, cutting off electricity and communication networks. Many families were forced to leave their homes for safety.
The disaster affected twelve districts and cities, with 27,568 households (around 97,384 people) impacted. Some of the hardest-hit areas include Aceh Singkil, Aceh Timur, Pidie, Bireuen, Aceh Utara, Aceh Selatan, Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Barat, Langsa, Lhokseumawe, and Bener Meriah. A total of 12 people lost their lives, with most cases reported in Central Aceh.
Human Initiative’s Emergency Response
Human Initiative is working together with local volunteers and authorities to provide rapid response. Teams are evacuating residents trapped by rising water to safe locations. Ready-to-eat meals are being distributed to affected families in Pidie and Aceh Singkil to help meet their urgent food needs. Field teams are also conducting direct assessments in Pidie, Aceh Singkil, and Lhokseumawe to ensure aid reaches families whose access is limited by landslides or damaged bridges.
Follow-up efforts are ongoing. Human Initiative continues to coordinate additional aid distribution and support communities throughout the emergency phase. The focus is on sustaining essential assistance so affected families can meet their basic needs until conditions improve and daily life becomes stable again.
