Floods Across Three Provinces Wash Away Children’s School Supplies

Floods that struck the provinces of Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra since late November arrived just as many families were preparing to rest. A night that was usually quiet suddenly turned into hours filled with fear. Water rose quickly, entered homes, and forced residents to rush to safer places. In the darkness, Hana and Ria climbed onto the roof. They did not fully understand what was happening, but they could see the water steadily rising without stopping.

Hana, a third-grade student, lives with her father, who is currently ill, and her grandfather. She lost her mother before she started school. Because of their limited family situation, the flood brought an even heavier impact on them. In addition to damaging their home, the disaster disrupted the routines that had given them a sense of stability. They had no time to take anything, and their sleepwear was the only clothing left throughout the night.

The strong current also swept away all of their school supplies. Their bags, uniforms, shoes, socks, and books disappeared without a trace. In a soft voice, Hana said, “My bag, uniform, shoes, and books were all washed away. Nothing is left. I don’t know what we will wear to school later.” Her words were simple, but her worry was clear.

Before the Human Initiative team continued data collection, Hana shared her hope once more: “If you come back later, please bring us bags, uniforms, socks, and shoes. We don’t have anything anymore.” This request showed how important school is for them, even after such a frightening night.
